Google Pixel 4 Will Feature Face Unlock, Touch-free Gestures

Google once again confirms some of the features of upcoming Pixel 4. Last time they tweet the photo of the Pixel 4 now they released a blog post and a short YouTube video to reveal the features. Google confirms that Pixel 4 will have face unlock as a replacement for the fingerprint sensor. Pixel 4 will also have motion-sensing Soli radar that will let you skip tracks, silence phone calls and control other key phone tasks by waving your hand. On top of these Soli rader will also help in face unlocking.

Motion Sense

The “Motion Sense” feature will be controlled by the Soli motion-sensing radar. Soli has been developed by the Advanced Technology and Projects team (ATAP). The sensor is located at the top of Pixel 4 that senses small motions around the phone. Combined with software algorithms it can recognize gestures and detect when you’re nearby. You’ll be able to use gestures to skip songs, snooze alarms, silence phone calls, and more. Google says the feature will be limited to “select Pixel countries.”

Face Unlock

It is a long-time rumour that the Pixel line up would feature face unlock and finally it is happening in Pixel 4. Google uses an infrared camera for face recognition like other phones but they engineered in a different way. Like other phones, you won’t have to lift the device up, hold it to your face and then swipe to get to the home screen. Instead of these, the Soli hardware turns on the face unlock sensors when you reach for the Pixel 4. If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognize you, the phone will open as you pick it up, all in one motion. The face unlock works in almost any orientation.

With the face unlock technology will put Pixel 4 on par with iPhones. And if the technology is as fast as it is the theory then  Pixel 4 will get an advantage over other devices. Most of the Android phones use only the selfie camera for an insecure face unlock, so the face unlock feature can’t be used in other scenarios. But as the Pixel 4 will have the actual face unlock hardware so it can be used for secure payments and app authentication too. As with the iPhone, Google says that biometric data will be stored locally in a secure chip and never share with other Google services.

One more thing that we can determine from the shared picture that the Pixel 4 will not feature a wide-angle camera like the Pixel 3.  Although Google has not given any date for the launch. It is expected to launch later this year, most probably in October. Let us know about your thought on the Pixel 4 below.
