Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge Browser Debut Today

Microsoft finally released the preview of chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser. Over the past few months, we’ve been seeing Microsoft’s plan to replace their Edge browser on Windows 10 with a browser based on Chromium, Google’s open-source base for Chrome. The canary builds will get daily updates and the developer builds will see weekly updates. Over time, you’ll also be able to opt into the beta channel and, eventually, the stable channel. Now you can download the Canary Build here.

Back in December Microsoft first announced this project and decided to abandon their own browser engine. With the debut of this new browser, we’ve now two major browser engines that are Google’s Chromium and Mozilla’s Gecko.

New Chromium based Edge is similar to Google Chrome in terms of visual look. Microsoft has integrated its various services like Bing, Microsoft News, and Windows Defender SmartScreen into the browser. Some of the syncing features are already working and remaining syncing feature is expected to coming in the next few builds. It also should be noted that Edge also supports Chrome extensions in addition to Microsoft’s own extension store. For now, it only supports bing as the default search engine, more option will be added in future builds.

Edge has a build in dark mode which you can activate using flag. If you are Windows 10 user then you can make this new Chromium-based Edge browser your new default browser easily. As it is a preview you can see some bugs here and there but those will be resolved in future builds.

This new Chromium Based Edge browser is only available for Windows 10 and only 64-bit version is available. Microsoft’s promise, of course, is that it will also bring the new Edge to Windows 7 and Windows 8, as well as the Mac. If you are a 64-bit Windows 10 user then you try this browser downloading from here.
