Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 865 Plus: CPU that Breaks 3 GHz Barrier

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC. This is the refresh of Snapdragon 865 SoC launched back in December last year. Qualcomm says that the new chip is designed to offer increased performance across the board for better gameplay with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology on board. It is said to boost performance by almost 10 percent for gaming and AI applications.

“As we work to scale 5G, we continue to invest in our premium tier, 8-series mobile platforms, to push the envelope in terms of performance and power efficiency and deliver the next generation of camera, AI, and gaming experiences. Building upon the success of Snapdragon 865, the new Snapdragon 865 Plus will deliver enhanced performance for the next wave of flagship smartphones,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies.

Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC offers boosted clock speed for the prime core. The clock of the speed of Prime Core is 3.1GHz compared to 2.84 GHz in Snapdragon 865 SoC which means a 10% increase in Prime Core clock speed.  And while there’s no official info on the maximum clock speed for the Adreno 650 GPU, we can assume it’s around 10 percent higher than the 587 MHz possible with the standard Snapdragon 865.

The 865+ also features the new FastConnect 6900 suite. This means it comes with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 instead of Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 on Snapdragon 865. Qualcomm says that a new chip with the help of Wi-Fi 6E can achieve a 3.6 Gbps network speed. Other than that, the 865 Plus offers everything that the regular 865 did. You get support for 144Hz refresh rates, 8K video recording, 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave support, and everything else.

Qualcomm is saying that devices powered by the brand new Snapdragon 865 Plus will start coming out in the third quarter of 2020. Asus and Lenovo have both confirmed that they’ll be among the first brands to support the new SoC, in the form of the ROG Phone 3 and the rumored Legion Gaming Phone.
