Microsoft is shutting down AltspaceVR on 10th March in its latest push for restricting. The company announced the news in a blog post. Microsoft acquired the social virtual reality platform back in 2017. Microsoft instead will shift focus to Microsoft Mesh. AltspaceVR is giving its user a chance to download their content before it goes offline on March 10th.Â
AltspaceVR was one of the very first platforms that offered social VR experiences. The platform enabled artists, creators, brands, and businesses to create virtual events. After running out of money in 2017 it has acquired by Microsoft in its ambition to create its own mixed-reality ecosystem.
Microsoft Mesh is supposed to be its successor. However, Mesh differs from AltspaceVR in many ways. Mesh is targeted toward businesses that want to collaborate remotely. But as Microsoft is cutting its workforce and scaling back its metaverse ambition, we would have to wait to see how things would turn out in the future.
