Amazon Opens an AR-Enabled Hair Salon in London

Amazon, World’s one of the biggest online retailers, is now opening a hair salon in London. Yes, read it correctly, a hair salon. But it isn’t your traditional hair salon. After all, this is Amazon we are talking about. Amazon will integrate technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) with a conventional salon experience.

Where it is located: The salon is located in Brushfield Street in London’s Spitalfields and set over two floors and more than 1,500 sq. ft. Amazon Salon will trial the latest industry technology, from augmented reality (AR) hair consultations to point-and-learn technology.

Who will provide service: Haircare and styling services at Amazon Salon will be provided by Elena Lavagni, owner of Neville Hair & Beauty, an independent salon based in London. Lavagni and her team have provided services for events such as Paris Fashion Week and the Cannes Film Festival.

What technology: The focus of the salon is the use of AR technology for hair styling. Using AR, the customer will be able to experiment with different virtual hair colors.

  • Customers will be provided with a Fire tablet at each styling station. They can use it for entertainment. They will be able to capture their new look in a dedicated creative area.
  • Amazon salon will also test new point-and-learn technology, where customers can simply point at the product they are interested in on a display shelf and the relevant information, including brand videos and educational content, will appear on a display screen.
  • To order the products, customers can scan the relevant QR code on the shelf to visit the product detail page on Amazon.co.uk and purchase, with delivery direct to their home. Amazon will showcase best-selling products on the shelf.

But why a salon: Well you can say it is the offline extension of the Amazon Professional Beauty Store on Amazon.co.uk. Or in other words, you can say it is a marketing stunt aimed at grubbing attention. The online store will sell wholesale spa and salon products to businesses with no minimum order value.

But there is a catch: As already said Amazon has no intention to start a salon business but it is just marketing for Amazon Professional Beauty Store. And that’s why Amazon has no plan to open any other Amazon Salon locations.

  • Moreover, if you are interested in trying the salon experience in its only location then bad news for you. Amazon Salon will initially be open to Amazon employees only. The general public will be able to access it at some time in the future.
