AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU Official: 16 Cores, 32 Threads, 4.7 GHz Boost

At Computex 2019 AMD launched their third gen Ryzen 3000 series CPU but they saved one announcement for E3 New Horizon Gaming Event. So finally AMD officially launched their flagship level Ryzen 9 3950X. It is the fastest chip in Ryzen 3000 family.

Specification:

As the rumors suggested AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is 16 core and 32 threads CPU, making it the world’s first 16 core mainstream CPU. Like all other Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, Ryzen 9 3950X is also based on AMD’s newest Zen 2 architecture. It is built on the 7nm processing node from TSMC. Ryzen 9 3950X has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and boost clock of 4.7. Zen 2 architecture brings 15% IPC increase over the last generation. It also supports PCIe 4.0 x16 in X570 chipset motherboard.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X specification

Ryzen 9 3950X wields two chiplets fused together via AMD’s Infinity Fabric and an I/O die. Ryzen 9 3950X has 8MB L2 cache and 64MB L3 cache. It has a TDP of only 105W which is really impressive considering it is 16 core 32 threads beast. We should remember Intel and AMD measure their TDP differently. Intel measures their TDP on the base clock which could lead to way higher TDP in full workload. While AMD measures their chip’s TDP at chip’s full utilization in its dynamic range. So Ryzen 9 3950X is really a power efficient CPU.

Performance Compared To Competition:

Intel doesn’t have any mainstream 16 core CPU. If we compare Ryzen 9 3950X with Intel’s top mainstream CPU i9 9900K, we can see that Ryzen is outperforming i9 in most cases. Ryzen 9 3950X has twice as much as core compared to i9 9900K. With Intel’s next-gen Comet Lake series appearing to top out at ten cores, it looks like AMD will hold that advantage for quite some time. As the Ryzen has double the core count, so it can take the crown of the best performing mainstream CPU, especially in multi-threaded workload.

If we compare Ryzen 9 3950X with Intel’s 16 core offering of i9 9960X from HEDT series, we can see Ryzen shines there too. Intel i9 9960X has a base clock of 3.1 GHz and boost clock of 4.4GHz while Ryzen has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and boost clock of 4.7GHz. In terms of TDP Intel, i9 9960X has 165W TDP while Ryzen 9 3950X has only 105W TDP. And we discuss earlier how Intel measures those numbers. While the Intel one has only 22MB cache memory, Ryzen 9 3950X has 72MB cache memory. This larger cache boosts the amount of data the processor can hold close to the execution engines, thus defraying the latency impact of memory accesses.

Price And Availability:

While all other Ryzen 3000 series CPU available on  July 7, 2019, AMD Ryzen 9 3950X would be available in September 2019. The Ryzen 9 3950X will cost you $749. While Intel offering i9 9960X will cost you wapping $1699. So in terms of cost, it also beat the Intel offering.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU

With the launch of Ryzen 3000 series, AMD is now giving tough comp[itition to Intel. After 2003 for the first time, AMD is ahead of Intel. AMD is really pushing themselves and bringing new and exciting features in their lineup. This is a good sign for end consumers like us.
