Samsung to Launch 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 SSD by the End Of Summer

Back January at CES Samsung showed off the Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 SSD. But at CES Samsung didn’t mention any date when they would launch the SSD. Now according to Ice Universe Samsung will launch the SSD in two months. Ice Universe is well known for its accurate Samsung related leaks.

Last year AMD bring PCIe Gen 4 support with the Zen 2 architecture based CPU. But up until now, Samsung doesn’t offer any PCIe 4.0 SSD. Other companies like Corsair, Gigabyte, ADTA is already providing PCIe 4.0 SSDs. So now after Samsung’s launch customers will have more options to choose from.

The timing of the release also makes sense too.  B550 motherboard will launch very soon which will bring PCIe 4.0 support to more people. And the release date around the time where Computex would normally have taken place. The Coronavirus pandemic may have created delays in manufacturing which ultimately affect the release date of the products.

The new PCIe 4.0 SSD from Samsung is rated to offer read and write speeds of up to 6500 MB/s and 5000 MB/s, respectively. The speed is relatively higher than the SSDs available in the market right now. Samsung will release the SSDs with lower capacities of between 250 GB and 1 TB. The performance of the new Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 SSD will be comparable to the SSD in the PlayStation 5.
