This is not something new, it has been long rumored that Apple will launch Mac powered by its own custom ARM silicon. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, forecasted that Apple will release its first Mac with an ARM processor in the first half of 2021.
Kuo noted that Apple is being more aggressive in funding R&D and production of 5nm process chips especially after the CoronaVirus outbreak recently. These 5nm chips which will power the next-generation iPhone and iPads are also expected to power the first ARM-based Macs.
This big shift from the Intel-based system to the ARM-based system is a very vital time period for Apple. Because Apple needs to redesign its OS to fit into the ARM-based system and fine-tuning the software for the best possible performance. Well, this refresh will also give Apple more room for future hardware updates as they will have more options. Apple will also need to give developers ample time and resources to make the switch effectively and ensure third-party app support.
