E-Commerce players in India like Flipkart, Amazon has asked time from the central govt to show Country of Origin label in the products on their sites. This one of the steps that govt has taken to push made in India products and cut off dependency on Chinese Goods.
According to a report by ET, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) held a virtual meeting between e-commerce companies including Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket, Reliance Retail, Tata Cliq, Jio Platforms and Grofers to discuss how to implement this.
The government has asked the companies to give feedback within a fortnight about the modalities after discussing them with the sellers. A retailer like Flipkart and Amazon has asked for 4-5 months of time to comply with the order.
Tuesday the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) made it mandatory to enter the “country of origin” while registering all new products. Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal is used by many government departments. The changes to the GeM, a Special Purpose Vehicle under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, are in line with the Centre’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India policies, an official statement said.
The decision comes at a time when anti-China sentiment is very high in the country due to ongoing border standoff between India and China. More and more people every day raising their voices to boycott Chinese products and push made in India product more into the market. This move can be a great push in that direction.
