Indian Government Officially Banned 59 Chinese Apps Including TikTok

More than a week ago there were reports that the Indian Intelligent Agency has red-flagged 52 Chinese apps. Now the Indian government has officially banned 59 Chinese apps including popular names like TikTok, Club Factory, Shareit, etc. 

The Ministry of Information Technology in a press release through Press Information Berau or PIB said that these apps posed threat to India “in view of the information available they are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.” The Ministry of Information Technology has banned these invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act. 

Govt said that they have taken this decision after receiving “many representations raising concerns from citizens regarding the security of data and risk to privacy relating to the operation of certain apps.” 

It also said, “the compilation of these data, it’s mining, and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.”

The decision has come at a time when tension between India and China is rising in the border. India is a emerging supermarket for digital products. By blocking these apps India will sure hurt the Chinese ambition of digital supremacy over the world.
